China captures US unmanned Navy Vessel

China unlawfully seized an unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) on December 15th in the South China Sea while it was being recovered by the US Navy Oceanographic survey ship. Pentagon Press Secretary Peter Cook said. He also asked China to “immediately” return the UUV untampered, as it was in international waters and China has no legal cause to seize it.

The UUV along with the USNS Bowditch (T-AGS 62) is an unclassified ocean glider system used around the world to gather military oceanographic data such as salinity, water temperature, and sound speed. The system was conducting a routine check in accordance with the international law about 50 nautical miles northwest of Subic Bay, Philippines, when a Chinese Navy PRC DALANG III-Class Ship (ASR-510) retrieved the UUV.

This incident comes after the factual evidence that China has militarized the artificial islands built in the South China Sea region, an action in direct contradiction of a pledge made by President Xi Jingping. This is deeply disturbing and not consistent with the actions of a nation seeking to built a constructive and cooperative relationship with the USA. Read the full article here!
