A 22 year old Turkish police officer with the riot police, Mevlut Mert Altintas, killed the Russian Ambassador Andrei Karlov in Ankara on Monday, shooting the diplomat in front of a room full of horrified spectators at an art gallery in an assassination captured on video and quickly shared around the world. It was seen that as the ambassador lay on the ground, Altintas waved his gun and screamed, “Don’t forget Aleppo! Don’t forget Syria!” He also shouted, “We are those who pledged Jihad to Muhammad!” and then referring to Syria he added, “Every single person who has a share in this atrocity will pay for it!”
The attack came as Andrei Karlov was speaking at the opening of an exhibit of Russian photos. The assailant, Altintas was killed in a shootout that followed with the police at the gallery, and several other people were wounded in the attack.
The shooting was a retaliatory attack on Russia for entering the war in Syria on the side of President Bashar al-Assad (Syria). Russia had heavily bombarded Aleppo for a quick and strong victory, however killing and injuring hundreds of civilians in the process. The bombardment had drawn international condemnation. However, Russia, trying to clear its name, had said that they have exclusively targeted “terrorists”.
Russian President Vladimir Putin called it a “provocation aimed at rupturing ties between Russia and Turkey.” Putin orderd his major crime investigative to work with Turkish authorities. Russia vowed to reveal a larger plot. Read the full article here.
