Constructing the largest telescope

#construction #telescope #space #astronomy #planets #ELT #Europe #Chile #stars

The European Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) is being built in Chile, and when completed, it will be the world’s largest optical telescope (about five times larger than current ones). The main mirror of the telescope will measure 39 meters across and will be located on a 3,000-meter-high mountain in the Atacama Desert. It will begin operations in 2024. The construction costs are estimated at $1.12 billion.

The telescope will have the ability to find smaller planets and image larger ones, going as far as characterizing their atmospheres. This is being considered one of the greatest examples of the possibilities of science, and will help in discoveries of planets orbiting other stars, which in turn might be exo-planets.

Atacama Desert was chosen because of its dry atmosphere that provides perfect observing conditions. By the 2020s, the region will have almost 20 percent of the World’s astronomical infrastructure.

#ManchesterUnited #Ibrahamovic #EuropaLeague #soccer #Europe #Anderlecht

Manchester United reached the Semi-finals of Europa League for the first time, after beating Anderlecht by 2-1. However, the match comes more as a negative to United manager Jose Mourinho, as Ibrahimovic was seriously injured during the match.

Ibrahamovic’s injury occured late in stoppage time, his right knee bending the wrong way as he landed following an aerial challenge in the Anderlecht box, leaving him grimacing on the deck. He has currently scored 28 goals this season, and he might be able to play again this season.

Manchester United won due to the extra-time strike by Marcus Rashford. United is looking forward for winning the Europa League title, since it is the only major title it hasn’t won as of yet.

President Erdogan announces victory in Turkey’s referendum

#Turkey #Europe #Asia #PresidentErdogan #OneManRule

Erdogan had said that about 25 million people have supported his proposal which is meant to replace the parliamentary system in the country, to an all-powerful presidency and abolish the office of Prime Minister. Thousands of supporters rallied in Ankara and Istanbul in celebration.

Erdogan, who has himself survived a failed coup in July 2016, has already detained 47,000 people and suspended 120,000 people regarding the matter.

However, the Opposition party’s Kemal Kilicdaroglu (CHP) has questioned the legitimacy of the referendum as ballots which were not stamped by the Turkey’s High Electoral Board (YSK) Officials were also declared valid. Kilicdaroglu has accused Erdogan of seeking a ‘one-man regime’. However, many of the supporters in Turkey supported the ‘One-man rule’ way.

In Wednesday’s match between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, Ronaldo netted his 100th European goal. Real Madrid won the match 2-1, both goals being scored by Ronaldo.

Arturo Vidal headed a corner for Bayern and got a first half-lead, which was soon made level by a Ronaldo volley. The day when Britain officially exited. Brexit.

#Britain #Brexit #EU #Brussels #DonaldTusk #TheresaMay #Europe

Sir Tim Barrow, Britain’s new envoy to the EU rode to the European Council in his ambassadorial Jaguar, and then at 11:25 GMT, gave the narrow white envelope, that bore the Prime Minister’s Theresa May Brexit notification, to Donald Tusk, who chairs summits of EU leaders.

A few minutes later, Tusk tweeted that After nine months, the UK has delivered #Brexit. This was one topic on the routine weekly agenda for the 28 EU national envoys, and now that Brexit is underway – Barrow will get used to not being invited to all the EU discussions.

Commissioned in happier times when the EU seemed destined to go on expanding, it was no little irony that the first great moment of history, witnessed by the EU Council’s newly opened Europa Building, should be the unprecedented shrinking of the Union.

Donald Tusk did sum up the moment in some short words: What can I add to this? We already miss you. Thank you and goodbye.

Companies can ban employees from wearing religious accessories

#Europe #EU #discrimination #business #religion #political #ECJ

European companies can ban employees from wearing religious or political symbols including the Islamic headscarf.

Although this might be strange and too professional for a workplace to ban all employees from wearing “any political, philosophical or religious sign”, I do not understand the reason to raise statements such as “companies can ban employees from wearing headscarves.” Please understand that the statement is valid for all employees, regardless of their religion or dressing, and is not a way of discriminating people. EU, as a whole, is promoting it’s own culture at workplace. (Then again, different people might see this news in different light)

In 2003, Samira Achbita, a Muslim, was employed by G4S security services as a receptionist. The company had an “unwritten rule” that employees should not wear any political, religious or philosophical symbols at work.

Samira told G4S that she wanted to wear the Islamic headscarf but wasn’t allowed to. Consequently, the unwritten rule was converted into a formal ban and was valid for all employees. Samira went to court claiming discrimination.

However, considering that G4S has a ban on all the employees, regardless of their religion, the case cannot be held true and ECJ ruled in the favor of G4S.
