President Park Geun-hye was stripped of her powers over a corruption scandal, and this has plunged the country into a political turmoil. The Police braced for more violence between opponents and supporters.

The Police agency was planning to deploy nearly 20,000 officers and hundreds of buses to separate the two crowds, whose rallies had divided the streets near the presidential palace.

The scandal caused the stunning fall of Park Geun-hye, first female leader of South Korea, and is the first President to be impeached since democracy replaced dictatorship in the later 1980s.

A inner civil war is the last thing South Korea wants at the moment, being a country with no President (at least till a new President is appointed in the next 2 months), having high-tensions with North Korea over the firing of missiles and being economically retaliated by China over the installation of US anti-missile system THAAD on it’s soil.

South Korean President Park Geun-hye has been impeached, with the constitutional court on Friday upholding a parliamentary vote to eject her from office for her role in a corruption and influence-peddling scandal. Election for a new president must now be held within 60 days.

This case, which involves not only the President but also CEOs of leading companies like Samsung, a high-profile prosecutor and the head of the national pension fund, the world’s third largest.

The news comes at not a great time for South Korea, when there are high tensions with neighboring countries like North Korea for firing missiles and threats, and also China, who is retaliating against South Korea as punishment for deploying the American anti-missile battery THAAD.

The scandal revolves around President Park and her lifelong friend, Choi Soon-sil, who is accused of planning to take $37 million from Samsung alone. Prosecutors have recommended a total of 13 charges against Park including abuse of power, coercion of donations and the sharing of state secrets.

China angry, THAAD

The decision of South Korea’s Lotte Group approval to a land swap with the government isn’t considered to be a good decision by the Chinese state media. This land swap will enable authorities to deploy a US missile defense system.

The government decided last year to deploy the US Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system, in response to the North Korean missile threat, on land that is part of a golf course owned by Lotte in the Seongju region, southeast of Seoul. The deal was approved with the government on Monday.

A South Korean military official told Reuters the military would begin installing fences and soldiers would patrol the area.

China objects to this deployment in South Korea because THAAD has a powerful radar capable of penetrating Chinese territory, and it is a threat to its security and will do nothing to ease tension with North Korea.
