President Trump has removed Chief Strategist Steve Bannon from the National Security Council, a decision that has been applauded by many in the government. A White House official also said that Bannon was only placed in the NSC as a check on Michael Flynn and had attended only one of the NSC’s regular meetings, an explanation that was rejected by two current national security officials.
This appeared as a mark of victory for National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster, who thought that he was in a battle to the death with Bannon.
Bannon was the head of Breitbart News, a right-wing website, before he joined the Security Council. He had also been there in Trump’s team during the Presidential campaigns. However, a confidante from Trump administration says that Bannon still had the full confidence of the president.
Bannon’s seat on the NSC’s “principals’ committee,” a group that includes the secretaries of state, defense and other ranking aides, was taken by Rick Perry, who as energy secretary is charged with overseeing the US nuclear weapons arsenal.
